HISTORY
The origin of who we know today as Captain Docky — Juan José Salomón — dates back to his youth as an athlete, when he began to pursue what would later become one of his greatest dreams: promoting tourism through sport.
Among the many sports Captain Docky enjoyed, water sports were his true passion — especially surfing. His desire to include his family in an activity that combined recreation, fun, and quality time together inspired the idea of developing kayaking as a means of ecotourism, personal health, and family well-being.
During his younger years, Captain Docky had the opportunity to travel to North Carolina, USA, where he received training and certification in camping, survival, archery, horseback riding, and kayaking. It was there that he discovered the magical experience of outdoor adventure and the deep connection between nature and the human spirit.
At the age of 35, facing challenges with overweight and early signs of hypertension and diabetes, Captain Docky made a personal commitment to improve his health through sports. After achieving his goal, he decided to share his journey by promoting eco-friendly, sustainable sports tourism. Having practiced football, squash, motocross, enduro, and surfing, he ultimately discovered that kayaking was the perfect path to combine sport, nature, and community.
His first kayaking experience in El Salvador took place at Posa Verde, San Miguel Tepezontes, Lake Ilopango, where he discovered the incredible natural beauty and tourism potential of the country.
In 2019, he launched his first project, Kayak 503, with a modest fleet of three kayaks — one borrowed, one halfway functional, and one repaired. At that time, no company in the country imported or promoted kayaking. Yet, driven by passion and determination, he began what would become a national movement.
Today, Captain Docky is recognized as one of the pioneers — even a father figure — of kayaking in El Salvador, proudly represented through Docky Kayak.
